The government has moved towards implementing UK-specific legislation to cover medicines and medical devices. On 13th February 2020 Baroness Blackwood, the junior health minister, laid the Medicines & Medical Devices Bill before Parliament.
The bill is an enabling mechanism to allow the speedy introduction of the secondary legislation necessary to regulate these sectors. How closely whatever is to come will mirror current legislation remains to be seen.
According to the gov.uk website, the legislation will “allow the government to ensure medical devices are subject to the highest standards of regulation, further boosting patient safety and ensuring the UK leads the way in developing pioneering health technology.”
